Source platforms
Four migration paths. Tap the one that's yours.
Each source platform has distinct gotchas. Each tab covers its discovery, SEO risks, and timeline.
Magento to Shopify Migration
Magento to Shopify Migration is our most common replatform and the one with the deepest customization debt. Magento stores typically run on an extension stack piled up over 5–10 years — some genuinely load-bearing, most vestigial from attempts that didn't work.
Our Magento-to-Shopify discovery audits the extension list in three buckets:
- Real logic we preserve — custom pricing, wholesale rules, fulfillment integrations, loyalty calculations. Each gets a Shopify equivalent: native feature, Shopify app, Function, or custom app we build.
- Duplicate logic the merchant didn't know about — two review apps, three analytics tools, two fulfillment integrations running in parallel for years. Most get cut.
- Dead code — extensions installed, never configured, still loading JS on every page request. Deleted.
Magento-specific SEO notes on every migration:
- Magento's URL structure (
category/subcategory/product) often collapses into Shopify's flatter architecture. Decide per store: preserve hierarchy via breadcrumb metafields (display only), or flatten entirely for SEO clarity. - Magento's attribute system (
color, size, custom attributes) maps to Shopify variants + metafields. Decisions documented per attribute. - Magento's layered navigation generates faceted URLs that may be indexed. 301 to canonical collection, or noindex depending on intent.
- Historical orders from Magento Commerce Enterprise include complex pricing records (tier pricing, catalog price rules) — reconciled at import, not glossed over.
Timeline: 10–16 weeks for mid-market Magento Open Source. Magento Commerce (Enterprise) skews to 14–20 weeks given integration depth. Pricing from $60k Open Source, from $120k Commerce Enterprise.
WooCommerce to Shopify Migration
WooCommerce to Shopify Migration is also a WordPress content migration. WooCommerce stores are WordPress sites with an e-commerce bolt-on — so the migration includes blog posts, custom post types, media library, and redirects for WordPress permalink structures, in addition to the store data.
What's distinct from a Magento migration:
- Content migration is real work. WooCommerce stores often have hundreds of blog posts, custom post types (glossaries, FAQs, author bios), and media that need to move to Shopify's CMS — as blog articles, products, pages, or metaobjects.
- Yoast SEO meta has to be exported and mapped — meta titles, descriptions, canonicals, per-post schema settings. Shopify metafields + the SEO field handle it once mapped.
- Permalink redirects are specific to WordPress patterns:
/?p=123,/YYYY/MM/slug/,/category/subcategory/,/tag/name/. Every variant needs a 301 target. - Plugin functionality replacement — Shopify's ecosystem has direct equivalents for most WooCommerce plugins (reviews, subscriptions, email, shipping). Some need custom work.
WooCommerce migrations are often the cleanest of the four because WooCommerce stores tend to be smaller and less customized. Typical timeline 8–14 weeks. Pricing from $40k.
BigCommerce to Shopify Migration
BigCommerce to Shopify Migration is usually cleaner than a Magento migration. BigCommerce has a narrower extension ecosystem and tighter native features, so there's less accumulated debt to audit. URL structure and product attribute systems are the main reconciliations.
BigCommerce-specific migration notes:
- Product option sets — BigCommerce often exposes options as URL parameters that Shopify handles via variants. Reconcile with canonicals and 301s to the product-level canonical.
- Native features to replace — BigCommerce's native reviews, abandoned cart, and wishlist functionality map to Shopify apps or custom logic depending on scope.
- Category URL structure — typically flatter than Magento. Fewer hierarchy collapses.
- Orders export — BigCommerce's order export is straightforward. Reconciliation is usually cleaner than Magento's.
BigCommerce migrations typically 8–14 weeks. Pricing from $40k for mid-market. BigCommerce Enterprise skews higher given integration depth.
Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify Migration
Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify Migration is the most complex of the four and almost always lands on Shopify Plus. SFCC merchants migrate to Plus with B2B companies/catalogs, enterprise integrations (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite), custom checkout logic (cartridge → Functions), and multi-market/multi-brand architecture.
What we reconcile on every SFCC migration:
- Cartridge logic — SFCC cartridges (custom pipeline logic) migrate to Shopify Functions for cart transforms, payment customization, pricing; or Shopify Flow for order routing, fraud, ops automation.
- B2B migration — SFCC's B2B feature set (Buyer Hub, contract pricing, account hierarchy) maps to Shopify B2B: companies, catalogs, price lists, customer-specific terms, approval workflows.
- Enterprise integrations rebuilt — SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, SFDC integrations rebuilt on Shopify's stack. Often the longest single workstream, 6–10 weeks dedicated.
- Multi-market / multi-brand architecture — SFCC site architectures (sites, realms, locales) map to Shopify Plus HQ topology (stores, markets).
- Performance expectations — SFCC merchants expect enterprise-grade CWV. Performance budgets set day one.
- Merchant Success architectural review before build commits — required for all enterprise Plus migrations, and we set this up as a Plus Partner.
Timeline: 14–20 weeks. Pricing from $150k. Dedicated squad throughout (engineer pair, design lead, SEO lead, integration specialist, project lead). Migration SEO track runs in parallel with development — 301 map, schema parity, canonical reconciliation, staging crawls, launch-day monitoring, 30/60/90 recovery.
For Plus-primary engagements (new Plus builds, not migrations), see Shopify Plus Agency. For migration SEO deep dive, see how to replatform without losing rankings.
Parallel SEO track, not post-launch audit.
Most migrations lose 20%+ traffic for six months. A well-run migration dips 5–15% for 2–6 weeks, then clears baseline.
